Description

Larger than any existing diesel-powered fast ferry - catamaran or monohull - "Benchijigua Express" is world's largest all-aluminium ship and first commercial trimaran with significant commercial and military applications.

With the handover completed on April 13 2005, the new 127 metre, Auto Express 127 trimaran built by the West Australian shipyard, Austal, for Fred. Olsen, S.A. is quite simply the most significant vessel to arrive on the fast ferry stage and is set to allow fast sea transportation to improve and open up new markets beyond the ability of existing fast ferry design for both commercial and military operators.

"The characteristics of this new vessel, with a length of 126.7 metres and beam of 30.4 metres, will improve overall efficiency in terms of passenger capacity, deadweight and freight lane metres by more than 35%. At the same time passenger comfort will increase by 25% to 40% depending on the routes we operate", Mr. Olsen said.

Description

The Magazzù's lengthy research activity in the field of fast naval transport, produced the innovative idea of stabilising and improving the performance of monohulls by using particular lifting surfaces.
The final industrial result was the conceiving of a totally innovative ship known as "MONOSTAB" (STABilised MONOhull) obtained by the integration of a specially developed semi-planing hull and a totally original system of "active foils" at the stern and operated by an automatic control system with the double role of reducing both the ship's rolling and pitching motion.
In order to control the trim, conventional flaps are used in parallel to avoid saturating the wings and to avoid using unnecessarily large foil systems.

Description

The first of the entirely new “Spirit” class of fast passenger ferry has proven to be a reliable workhorse for her new owners. “Spirit of Skye” entered service with West Highland Seaways on 2nd June 2004, with the keel laid in early January of the same year.

The vessels requirements were to carry 36 passengers and 2 or 3 crew on a twice daily return journey from Gairloch to Portree on the Isle of Skye, a distance of 27 miles. The hull form was designed as an optimum compromise between meeting the requirements for static intact and damage stability, and a minimum GM for dynamic comfort.

The vessel was also required to comply with the new EU Passenger Ship Safety Regulations, the Workboat Code of Practice, and local MCA requirements.

The build time was extremely quick from Sandy Morrison Engineering, Uig, Isle of Skye. Their investment in state of the art CNC plate cutting machinery, coupled with parts generation directly from the computer model in Maxsurf meant parts could be designed, emailed, nested, cut, built and fitted within hours if required.
